Asbestos Discovery at California Post Office Delays Reopening

LA Testing provides analytical services, sampling supplies and test kits to identify asbestos and other exposure concerns common with building renovation projects.

Huntington Beach, CA – WEBWIRE

In March, the Vallejo Times-Herald published a report about the delayed opening of a California post office branch due to the discovery of asbestos. According to the article, the post office had been temporarily closed for remodeling when asbestos was found in the glue used for the floor tiles. The presence of asbestos-containing materials is expected to add two months to the location’s closure.

Old flooring materials, such as vinyl, sheet vinyl or asphalt floor tiles may contain asbestos. Any associated paper-like backing, mastic, adhesives or glues may also have it, as was the case in this instance. Asbestos-containing flooring can become friable over time and release fibers into the air. This is also true if the flooring materials are disturbed during renovation, remodeling or demolition activities. Improper attempts to remove these materials can release asbestos fibers into the air of a building or home, endangering building occupants.

“The only way to know for sure if floor tiles, mastics or glues contain asbestos is to have them tested,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “Flooring is just one common building material that could cause concerns as asbestos was used in so many products up until just a few short decades ago. Inadvertently exposing the public or workers to asbestos could result in costly noncompliance penalties and serious health concerns. Fortunately, asbestos testing is quick, inexpensive and in many circumstances is already required by health and safety regulations.”

California residents concerned about potential exposure to asbestos can turn to the laboratory professionals at LA Testing. They have multiple laboratories across California that offer asbestos testing services and all of the sampling supplies needed. They even provide easy-to-use test kits for asbestos and other commonly encountered indoor hazards such as lead, mold and radon.
