At the Cannes Film Festival 2018, IDFA will be participating in several panels. IDFA’s Artistic Director Orwa Nyrabia for instance will take part in a discussion about the future of festivals and the role of documentary festivals in a rapidly changing media environment.

Saturday, May 12: Co-producing outside Europe, the role of the international co-production funds

Isabel Arrate Fernandez, Managing Director of the IDFA Bertha Fund, will take part in a panel about the benefits of co-producing outside Europe. How do the European international co-production funds work and operate? What’s in it from a European producer’s perspective and what are the lessons to learn from their experiences? Six European co-production funds active on the international segment and supported by MEDIA present their work, visions and function in this panel. Each of the funds will bring and share the floor with a producer (or distributor) benefiting from one of the funds. The IDFA Bertha Fund will be joined by representatives from TorinoFilmLab, CNC - ACM Distribution, Sørfond, Hubert Bals Fund and World Cinema Fund.

Monday, May 14: Documentary Festivals: drivers of innovation or keepers of the tradition?

IDFA’s Artistic Director Orwa Nyrabia will be one of the speakers in a talk, ’Documentary Festivals: drivers of innovation or keepers of the tradition?’ Other guests are Tine Fisher (CPH:DOX), Leena Pasanen (DOK Leipzig) and Emelie Bujès (Visions du Réel). They will share their views on the future of festivals and discuss the role of documentary festivals in a rapidly changing media environment. This talk will be held in the framework of the Doc Talks (organised by the European Documentary Network, EDN). The session will be moderated by Paul Pauwels, director of EDN.

Tuesday, May 15: Documentary in a Changing Media Landscape

IDFA’s Artistic Director Orwa Nyrabia will join other industry experts to contemplate the future of docs. What are the three biggest challenges threatening the documentary environment in the next five years? What are the three biggest opportunities for the documentary genre in the next five years? Speakers include Tom Quinn (NEON), Fabrice Puchault (ARTE), Diane Weyermann, (Participant Media).
