Simple Test to Determine if Well Water Presents a Lead Poisoning Hazard

EMSL Analytical offers water testing services, sampling supplies and test kits to identify lead hazards from private wells and other water supplies.

Cinnaminson, NJ – WEBWIRE

Over the last several years there have been numerous reports of elevated lead levels in water sources in states from coast to coast. However, few of these media reports have addressed lead concerns from private wells.

While lead is rarely found in source water, it can enter tap water through the corrosion of plumbing materials, including brass or chrome-plated brass faucets and fixtures. These can leach significant amounts of lead into the water, especially with hot water. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports, “Private wells more than 20 years old may contain lead in the “packer” element that is used to help seal the well above the well screen. Some brands of older submersible pumps used in wells may also contain leaded-brass components. Corrosion of pipes and fixture parts can cause the lead to get into tap water.” The public should also recognize that buildings and homes constructed before 1986 are more likely to have lead pipes, fixtures and solder.

“People dependent on water from private wells typically have no idea if there are elevated lead levels coming out their tap unless they test their water,” said Joseph Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Fortunately; it’s quick and inexpensive to test for the presence of lead and other common water quality concerns. EMSL offers not only highly accurate testing services, but also all of the sampling supplies necessary and even an easy-to-use Drinking Water Test Kit. This affordable test can provide peace of mind or let people know that corrective actions need to be taken to ensure their water is not contaminated with elevated levels of lead.”

EMSL has also sponsored an educational video about lead in drinking water that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/1MhhreaWOv8.
