Agroecology in the spotlight

After the launch of the 2nd edition of the "Arbres d’Avenir" ("Trees for the Future") contest, AccorHotels announced the overall winners during a memorable evening at the Pullman Paris Tour Eiffel on 18 April. We look back on this unforgettable event which further highlights the Group’s commitment to the environment.

WEBWIRE

Founded in 2016, “Arbres d’Avenir” is the 1st agroforestry competition in France and results from the collaboration between AccorHotels and its partners PUR Projet, Fermes d’Avenir and Blue Bees.

Given that trees are increasingly disappearing from the farming landscape, French agriculture must adapt and develop approaches which are more respectful towards the environment. To do this, and for the 2nd consecutive year, the “Arbres d’Avenir” competition supports ecological transition projects managed by farmers who want trees to be an integral part of their core practices.

In 2 years it has financed the planting of 100,000 trees in almost 60 French farms.

Ambitious projects

For this edition, farmers were given until 29 October 2017 to submit their ecological transition projects. The most promising and innovative projects were then chosen by the public and on 18 April the verdict fell!
Tthe competition participants met up at the Pullman Paris Tour Eiffel in the afternoon and exchanged ideas during workshops focused on 2 key subjects “Living soil” and “Agroecology in 5 years”. The day finished with a conference-debate and the official prize-giving ceremony in the presence of Christophe Pinard, Advisor on biodiversity and agroforestry at the Ministry of Agriculture and Food. During the ceremony, Sven Boinet, Deputy General Manager at AccorHotels, reiterated the Group’s commitment to biodiversity and its support for "local producers”.

Among the 25 award-winning projects, 3 overall winners received special prizes:

Territorial Dynamic Prize: A Collective Project in Gironde (Benoît and Delphine VINET, Marie-Pierre LACOSTE, Nicole et Emilie CONTIERO)
Novice Farmer Prize: La Ferme du Chevalier (Cyrille CHEVALIER)
Nature 2050 Prize: Ferme de Layat (Stéphane SABOT andNathalie CERCLE)

The agroforestery choice

By helping French farmers and breeders to introduce or reintroduce trees to their farms, AccorHotels is strengthening its commitment to a greener and cleaner planet!
For almost 10 years now, our Group has been active in encouraging the transition towards more sustainable agriculture. It is a way of compensating for the impact on water and biodiversity from the agricultural production of the food consumed in our hotels! Through the Plant for the Planet program, 25 project holders have received financial aid in 2017 and support for their plantations over 3 years.

After the ceremony the participants had the chance to admire the photos in the “Portraits of Farmers” exhibition and exchange their ideas during a convivial cocktail reception. 9 portraits of exceptional men and women who actively participate in the reforestation of their agricultural land were in the spotlight. The exhibition was held in partnership with AccorHotels, PUR Projet and Fermes d’Avenir at the Trocadéro lounge of the Pullman Paris Tour Eiffel, a place very much involved in the competition and Plant for the Planet which has helped more than 20,000 trees to be planted to date!
