Set during the Middle Ages, the novel tells the story of Isabella of Bavaria, specifically how she turned from a highly respected figure to the most dishonored woman in France. While living out a once idyllic life with her husband and children, little did she know that her husband’s relatives are taking advantage of the brewing tensions between England and France for fulfilling their personal agenda. Her peaceful life begins to take a turn for the worse when she had to assume a leadership position due to her husband’s illness and passing.
The oppression Isabella had to deal with in Rogers’s novel, although not exactly similar, is not that far off from the struggles many women around the world continue to face today.
