Children’s Book Teaches Lessons on Kindness and Compassion

Animator-designer-turned-author Edward P. Ricci presents a heartening story about the bonds of family between those who are not bound by blood relations in Uncle Herman: The Easter Miracle.

Set in the 1930s, in a mining town in West Virginia, the book tells the story of Herman, a hulking Great Dane, who works all day, hauling coal to make a living. Herman is confronted with many challenges—feeding the orphaned puppies in his care, dealing with a crooked employer, and getting help for one of charges, Jennifer, who needs a hip operation. But the situation begins to look up when he makes a new friend out of the mine owner’s daughter.

A tale of compassion, kindness, and family, Uncle Herman includes illustrations by artist Michelle A. Casale. The cover of the book was done by Ricci himself, who is an expert in photo editing and Maya animation.

LitFire Publishing showcased Uncle Herman at the 2017 AJC Decatur Book Festival from September 1 to 3. The event took place at East Court Square, Decatur, Georgia.
