Through book, Christian Author Deborah Ruth Reaves hopes to motivate others to experience God in all aspects of their lives

Faith has always been a big part of Deborah Ruth Reaves’ life. She strives to think about God every waking hour – even at the most physically challenging moment of her life. It was during one of those times when she wrote devotionals that later made it to her book “From Weeds to Wisdom: Extracting Spiritual Lessons from The Unlikely” (ReadersMagnet, 2017).
 
For the devout and spiritual, “From Weeds to Wisdom” is not just another devotional; more than just a meditative book, it is a call to action. The book offers readers two gifts: first, the possibility of finding God in and through ordinary events and even ‘insignificant and despised’ objects, and second, the invitation – or else, the motivation – to pursue and experience Him.
 
“‘From Weeds to Wisdom’ was birthed as a means to endure excruciating therapy following a total knee replacement surgery,” said the author in her foreword. “I had no idea that these writings would give way to a devotional book that would not only benefit me, but also many others.”
 
The book includes 42 devotionals; each devotional is short but heavy in content and full of spiritual impact and insights and has the element of practical spirituality. The devotionals are inspired by events that had occurred in the author’s life, such as her total knee replacement surgery, and certain readings from the Scriptures that the author reflected upon and are related to her experiences.
 
In and through events or objects such as a toilet overflow, forgetfulness, breastfeeding, springtime, dog training, hoagies, and even weeds, the author sees spiritual analogies for the things she observes in the natural. She could never imagine that she would find and hear God’s voice. “I was amazed at how God would speak to me in such a unique way.”
 
Her devotionals, plus the way the author lives out her faith, affirm the presence and love of God even in ordinary circumstances. Above all, the book highlights one’s strong faith and deep commitment to God in the midst of life’s challenges.
 
“Even though we may suffer various trials in our lives, we can make the choice to defy them, to remain green, and to become even greener. Our adverse circumstances do not have to cause our demise. On the contrary, they can cause us to develop “long roots” that go down deep into the soil of our trials and produce life, not ordinary life, but life that is abundant and rich. Our hardships can work to aid us in developing “tough skin” for tough times!”
