Protecting California Residents from Occupational Exposures to Acetone and Other Chemical Hazards

LA Testing provides analytical services to identify exposure risks to acetone and a wide range of other industrial chemicals.

Huntington Beach, CA – WEBWIRE

Acetone is a fairly common chemical and its use is widespread in homes and businesses throughout California. In residential settings, people can be exposed to acetone by using nail polish remover, household cleaners, paints, adhesives, rubber cement, particle board or other products that contain it. In occupational settings, workers may be exposed if they are employed at a facility that manufactures paints, plastics, chemicals, artificial fibers and even shoes. Employees could also come in contact with acetone if they work with solvents, paints, glues and commercial cleaning products.

According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, exposure to high levels of acetone can cause death, coma, unconsciousness, seizures and respiratory distress. It can also damage a person’s kidneys, skin and eyes. Breathing moderate-to-high levels for short periods of time can cause nose, throat, lung and eye irritation. It can also cause intoxication, headaches, fatigue, stupor, light-headedness, dizziness, confusion, increased pulse rate, nausea, vomiting and other conditions.

“The fact that acetone evaporates so easily makes it a potential inhalation concern in a number of occupations where workers may be exposed,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “People can come into contact with acetone by breathing it, ingesting it or absorbing it through their skin. It has even been found in over a third of the National Priorities List sites identified by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), so people living near one of these hazardous waste sites could be at risk of exposure.”

To protect workers in California, there is a permissible exposure limit (PEL) for acetone that employers must adhere to or face potentially severe noncompliance penalties from Cal/OSHA. To help prevent and identify exposure risks, LA Testing offers environmental and occupational testing services for it and a wide range of other chemicals. The laboratory specialists have also sponsored an educational video about acetone and potential exposure risks that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/nULPaHSSh7M.
