Contemporary Artist Dorothy Slikker Publishes Autobiography

Behind the paintings of the master painter from Pahrump, Nevada is an interesting story of a life well lived – and a venture worth pursuing.

Pahrump, Nevada – WEBWIRE

A master painter shares her life story to inspire future artists to not to give up on their passion.

In her first book, “My Art Walk to the Contemporary Masters” (2016), fine artist Dorothy Slikker impresses art enthusiasts with her portfolio of artworks. In her second book, she regales them with her life story.

The book is aptly titled “Looking Back Through The Life Of The Master Artist” (ReadersMagnet, 2018). Just like with her first book, the author dedicates her autobiography to her husband and best friend John, who encouraged her to follow her dreams, even giving her his blessing for her travel to Ohio to study and get certified in Robert Warren’s method of painting.

“Looking Back Through The Life Of The Master Artist” is not just the title of the book; it’s a legacy to her family and a testament to their fortitude. Slikker’s maternal grandparents were migrants from Oklahoma who moved to California during the Dust Bowl. After laboring for some time in the San Joaquin Valley, they moved to the town of Shafter, where they acquired and toiled their own land.

The book also somewhat serves as a homage of sorts to Slikker’s farming heritage. As a grand-daughter of Okies, she also did her share of farm work, though she hated it. She swore to herself that she will never marry a farmer but she ended up marrying John, a farmer. “Now look what God sent me to love another damn farmer. He was just beautiful I couldn’t keep from falling in love and I still am.”

As expected, the autobiography is replete with stories of her love for art – and her longing to make art. Even when she was young, she already saw her future in art, but she had to abandon her dream, albeit temporarily when her stepfather told her to pursue a traditional career. “Art will not support you,” he told her.

For many years, Slikker worked different jobs but she never lost her love for art. An encounter with a friend’s daughter, who happened to be an art instructor, brought her back to the world of art. After some reluctance, she agreed to take classes from her, thus the reunion between brush and hand.
