“I could imagine my own ancestors in these situations (those of Buenavidas)—in fact much of what José Uranga recounts is probably very similar to what most early Hispanics experienced.” -Manuel Trinidad Pacheco, PhD

An honest and heartfelt account of how New Mexico became one of the states of the U.S. through the lives and eyes of the Buenavida family. “The Death of the Brown Americano” follows the Buenavidas, a Hispanic family, as they try to adapt to their new country while trying to preserve their language, customs, and culture.

Growing up in New Mexico, author and retired environmental lawyer José N. Uranga used historical facts and personal experience coming from a Hispanic family to pen the story of the Buenavida family. The patriarch of the Buenavida family is on his deathbed. The man they called the Brown Americano is already 86 years old and in a coma. The book recalls how Juan Buenavida guided his fellow Hispanic Americans in defending against discrimination in the Southwest and Western U.S. It is also the story of how the Buenavidas and other Hispanics persevered and contributed to the new sociopolitical landscape in the Southwest.

Critics and reviewers, alike, praise the author’s poignant way of writing the history of how Hispanics were treated in the Southwest during the late 1850s to the early 1900s. Manuel Trinidad Pacheco, PhD, president emeritus of University of Arizona and of the University of Nebraska, stated: “I could imagine my own ancestors in these situations (those of Buenavidas)—in fact much of what José Uranga recounts is probably very similar to what most early Hispanics experienced.” While Cynthia Castaneda, PhD, professor of government in Eastfield College, said that the book is “an excellent supplement for New Mexico history teachers.”

“The Death of the Brown Americano” is a 2010 Foreword Book of the Year Finalist in the historical fiction category.
