(EMAILWIRE.COM) Toronto, Canada -- The beauty and value of Natural Fancy Color Diamonds have fascinated aficionados, collectors even the lay person. However, prices of these color gemstones are trending up.  To the investors, this trend should be an indicator to add colored diamonds to diversify a portfolio.

In recent years, between 2015 and 2017, auction houses have been setting records sales of natural colored diamonds, reports Premier Diamond Group (North America) Ltd.

2015
This year, the Fancy Color Diamond market made its mark with the sales of The Blue Moon, Sweet Josephine, The Unique Pink and the 75-carat Yellow Diamond.  The Blue Moon, known for its fancy vivid blue and weighed 12.03 carats went for $48.4 million according to Reuters. That was about $4,000,000 per carat -- quite a record price.

The Sweet Josephine, on the other hand, a fancy vivid pink diamond of 16.08 carats was sold for $28.5 million at Christie’s in Geneva, reports The Guardian.  The same year, according to Forbes, Christie’s also sold a 75-carat yellow diamond for $3.6 million in New York.

2016
CNN called 2016, “the year of the colored diamond.”  Sotheby’s set a record sale of The Unique Pink for $31.6 million -- a very rare pink diamond that weighed 15.38 carats.  Christie set a world record when the auction house sold the 15.6-carat Oppenheimer Blue for $57.5 million. The Argyle Violet went for $10 million.

2017
In April of 2017, a 59.60-carat Fancy Vivid pink was sold to Chow Tai Fook, a jewelry chain based in Hong Kong for $71.2 million.  The natural fancy colored diamond, according to GIA, “was the largest diamond of those grades ever graded.”

One can see that, just in the past three years, prices of natural colored diamonds are on the rise.  In some cases, the value of colored gemstones market keeps doubling over the years, this investment vehicle weathers recessions.  Colored diamonds have withstood recessions in the past 38 years and have not declined in value.  The price of natural colored diamond, especially the pink diamond, has grown by 180 percent in eight years alone according to some investment experts.
