Naturally Occurring Asbestos Complicates California Airport Runway Repairs

LA Testing provides asbestos analyses and sampling supplies to identify its presence from naturally occurring deposits and manmade environments.

Huntington Beach, CA – WEBWIRE

Recently, the North Bay Business Journal published a story about the discovery of naturally occurring asbestos at the an airport in California. It was reportedly found last October in the rock beneath the runway during renovation activities.

According to the California Air Resources Board, asbestos is a term used for several types of naturally-occurring fibrous minerals found in many parts of California. The most common type of asbestos is chrysotile, but other types are also found in California. When rock containing asbestos is broken or crushed, asbestos fibers may be released and become airborne. Exposure to asbestos fibers may result in health issues such as lung cancer, mesothelioma and asbestosis. Sources of asbestos emissions include unpaved roads or driveways surfaced with ultramafic rock, construction activities in ultramafic rock deposits or rock quarrying activities where ultramafic rock is present.

“The discovery at the runway renovation is expected to add approximately $1 million to the project, but this is good news because that cost is going into training and protecting construction workers and the public from exposure hazards,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “To help in these types of situations with identifying naturally occurring asbestos and manmade asbestos hazards, LA Testing offers comprehensive analyses, all of the sampling supplies necessary and even easy-to-use test kits. These services protect people’s health and help to keep companies in regulatory compliance.”

LA Testing has also sponsored an educational video about naturally occurring asbestos and exposure risks that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/CnO-jDNVH1Y.
