Although a smaller country, Lebanon’s use of sophisticated software and advanced data collection method underscores the risk cyber initiatives pose to online users. The DarkCyber, a video news program about the Dark Web and lesser known Internet services, is now available. You can view the video at www.arnoldit.com/wordpress or on Vimeo at www.vimeo.com.

The feature story for the week of February 3, 2018, reveals that Telegram may be the go-to system for buying and selling contraband weapons. Products available range from components for improvised explosive devices to ground-to-ground missiles. Software like SkyGoFree can help reveal the identity of users of chat systems designed to be secure.

Lebanon’s use of white hat and black hat surveillance techniques reveals that malware allows smaller countries to mount worldwide data collection operations. DarkCyber reports that the covert activities were revealed by human error, compromising years of police and intelligence work.

The program also reports about Edward Snowden’s Haven security app. The app is designed to alert a mobile device user if a third-party has accessed a mobile phone. However, it is not clear if the Haven app “phones home”, reporting information about the Haven user to a third party.

More information about Australian authorities closure of a Dark Web pornography site. Investigators assembled data about the owner of the site using several methods. The most interesting was a combination of pattern analysis of user behavior and linguistic characteristics of those accessing the site.
