Finally, the unbiblical origins of the Jewish concept of the afterlife are exposed.

Mike M. Joseph, a prolific writer, lecturer, and expert on the Old Testament, published “Sorry! There is No Afterlife! None Goes to Heaven or Hell!” (AuthorHouse, 2008).

This 300-plus page book might not look like a ponderous read but is really the opposite. In this book, the author disproves the afterlife beliefs of the three major Abrahamic religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

Guess what primary source he used in probing – and disproving – their concepts about the afterlife, heaven, and hell? Their respective “Holy Books,” namely the Bible and the Qur’an.

Armed with his devotion to the Bible and his prowess in modern and biblical Hebrew, Joseph investigates how the belief in the afterlife made its ways into the Jewish religion.

“Most Jews, including rabbis, believe it or not, do not know how and when the doctrine of the immortal soul has been ‘planted’ in the heart and mind of the Jewish community,” said the author in his book. “They do not know when the doctrines of Heaven and Hell or the ‘afterlife’ were first taught in a Jewish synagogue or school of learning.”

Joseph assert: “No Torah-obedient Jew had ever believed, in the pre-Second Temple era, in the doctrines of Heaven and Hell; in the teaching and belief about the ‘afterlife’ immediately after death…All these fables were first introduced into the psyche of the Jewish community around the middle of the first century – and mostly after the destruction of the Second Temple by Rome.”

The author traces the incorporation of afterlife beliefs into the Jewish religion to Philo Judeus, a philosopher who lived in Alexandria, a major site of a flourishing Jewish community, around 20 B.C.E.-50 C.E.). Philo embraced Plato’s concept of the immortality of the soul and introduced his ‘understanding’ of the ‘immortality of the soul’ to liberal Jewish believers in Alexandria.

“Jerusalem and the rest of the Jewish community did not accept this teaching for many years to come,” said the author. “Yet, gradually, the whole Jewish community ‘fell for it,’ and to this day most believe those teachings to be Biblically oriented.”

Believers who are not afraid to challenge their long-held beliefs about the afterlife should read “Sorry! There is No Afterlife! None Goes to Heaven or Hell!
