Love Knows No Color in Novel by Prolific Author Pamela M. McGee

Love transcends race in a story of interracial relationship that stands the test of time and politics.

McGee’s book helps readers relate to a diverse society where interracial marriages become common.

Anyone who has watched the movie “Loving” and is aware of the true events that inspired the movie – or just anyone who is ‘color-blind’ – will love “When You Dare to Love” (America Star Books, 2015), a novel by Pamela M. McGee. While the story deals with interracial relationship, its dominant themes are family, friendship, and love. To some extent, the story also tackles courage, tolerance, and choice.

In “When You Dare to Love,” the Pritchard family – Ben and Phyllis and their daughter Lisa – arrives at their new home. They become new neighbors to Bradley and Claire Hunter, an interracial couple. Phyllis and Lisa immediately become curious about the Hunters, and are eager to know the story of Bradley and Claire’s first meeting and eventual marriage. The Hunters’ story inspires Lisa so much that she draws a picture of them at school and gave it the name “A Portrait of Love.”

It is unfortunate that love and marriage could become matters that certain people would want to regulate or politicize. “When You Dare to Love” addresses the various aspects of interracial marriage, an issue that society still struggles with 50 years after the Supreme Court declared it unconstitutional to forbid marriages based on color. “Laws can legitimize people’s actions but it cannot regulate people’s hearts and/or people’s reactions,” the author said when asked about the points of her book.

The author hopes that her book will motivate readers to tackle the issue of interracial relationship. “This is not about black and white because there are as many interracial marriages as there are different races in this country. My hope is that this little book, novella, will cause people to give pause and think.”
