Book by Carlos Lupton Should Get Kids Interested in Geometry

Children hate geometry but love fairy tales and family stories – a fact that Carlos Lupton has taken advantage of when making his book “The Wonderful World of Genie Geometry: Story Book/Picture Book” (Dorrance Publishing, 2014).
 
The author aims to endear children to a subject they find scary and intimidating. His greater purpose is to end “math anxiety” by instilling in them the concepts of mathematics early on in their elementary years in hopes that when they reach high school, they may view mathematics as a fun subject. With geometry as the subject of his book, the author expects his intended readers to feel familiar with geometric figures when they encounter them again in high school (or even in college).  
 
“The Wonderful World of Genie Geometry” is divided into two parts: a story book and a picture book (work book). The story is an educational fairytale about a little girl named Genie Geometry. The story revolves around Genie’s family and the “mathematical relationships” that bind them.
 
Every time a character is introduced in the story book, the young learners are instructed to flip the book over (because the picture book is on the flip-side) and to draw that character. This method makes a lasting impression that results in the retention of a lesson or information.
 
Like many other children’s books, “The Wonderful World of Genie Geometry” contains important moral lessons to learn. Unlike many other books, it includes a glossary of mathematical terms and concepts. With this book, the author has proved that it is possible to teach morals alongside mathematics and vice versa.

Carlos Lupton has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics. Lupton is concerned with the “math anxiety” that is so prevalent in our American youth. Carlos designed his book, “The Wonderful World of Genie Geometry,” with a fun, interactive format. The book is in a fairy tale format designed to introduce young learners, between the ages of five and eight, to the jargon of geometry. On the flip side of the fairy tale (Story book) is the Picture book that is a coloring book that lets the learners draw their own version of each character in the Story book. Lupton hopes to capture the attention of home-schoolers, and those educators who have the academic freedom to use alternative teaching tools such as this Book.
