In an Age of Smartphones, Nevada Author J.E. Foughner Hopes to Keep Creative Imagination Alive

Nevada author and self-proclaimed fictional storyteller J.E. Foughner published “Imagine That!” (Christian Life Publishing, 2016).
 
Illustrated by Richard Brunning, this fascinating and innovative storybook will be displayed at the upcoming New York Rights Fair 2018. The first-ever copyright trade and licensing event dedicated to publishing, international rights, and licensing of content for both adult and children’s titles across all formats will be held on May 30 through June 1, 2018 at the Metropolitan Pavilion in Manhattan, New York City.
 
“Imagine That!” introduces readers to a host of colorful characters and above all, limitless possibilities to unleash their creative imagination.
 
What drives the author to write “Imagine That!”? What does he hope to achieve with the publication of his book?
 
The author aims to reintroduce the lost art of story-creation to parents and children. Story-creation differs from storytelling; it relies on one’s creative vision and resourceful imagination to tell stories without the benefit of a typical storybook or any reference.
 
With storytelling, stories are repeated over and over again, involving the same (type of) characters and leading to the same course of action. Story-creation promotes original thoughts and encourages fresh ideas, which the author believes helps parents and children develop the “ability for creating original and wondrous fairy tale stories.”
 
The publication of “Imagine That!” could not have come at a better time when the use of smartphones and electronics by children have become common. The author believes they contribute to less creative and imaginative children.
 
“Many electronic devices on the market today are stealing creative, original thought from young minds, replacing the child’s imagination with their own,” rued the author. It is for this reason that he wrote “Imagine That!”
 
“Before the age of electronics, the power of ‘imagination’ expanded one’s ideas. ‘Imagine That!’ is a book about how to return to thinking for yourself,” said the author.
