WWF mourns the loss of one of biodiversity’s strongest advocates

Nairobi – WEBWIRE

WWF is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Calestous Juma, at the age of 64. A renowned scholar on biodiversity, technology for sustainable development and economic growth in Africa, Juma was a member of the WWF International board between 2009 and 2012.

From his beginnings as an environmental journalist through his numerous assignments and writings – including his tenure as a board member with WWF International – Juma dedicated his life toward demonstrating how the environment and biodiversity can be the cornerstones for transforming global societies and economies through innovation, collaboration and ambition. He played a key role in establishing the Convention on Biological Diversity, overseeing its initial years as the first Executive Secretary, and his vision continues to be reflected in national and regional plans and policies across Africa even today.

Marco Lambertini, Director General of WWF International, said, “Calestous Juma’s work- and words - have long been an inspiration to all of us aiming to help build a sustainable future for the planet and humanity. His vision for sustainable development which recognizes the value of biodiversity, and possesses an unshakeable belief in the power of human innovation, reflects a deep understanding of both the challenges and opportunities we face today. All of us at WWF join the global conservation community in mourning the loss of one of biodiversity’s strongest advocates and are certain Calestous’ thinking and passion will continue to inspire and drive us and the work we do for years to come.”

Born in Kenya, Calestous Juma was serving as a faculty member at the Harvard Kennedy School at the time of his passing.
