Christmas recycling and waste collection dates

Household waste and recycling bin collections

Christmas is almost here and Barnet Council is advising residents there will be changes to recycling, food waste and refuse bin collection dates during the festive period.

Residents who are due to have their bins collected on Monday 25 December will receive their collection two days earlier on Saturday 23 December. All other scheduled bin collections of recycling, food waste and refuse will take place a day later than usual and normal scheduled collections of these bins will resume from Monday 8 January 2018.

Garden waste collections will pause from this Sunday (17 December) for six weeks over the Christmas and New Year period. The service will resume on Sunday 28 January 2018. Please check the online bin collection date search to confirm your next collection date after the festive period.

Councillor Dean Cohen, Chairman of Barnet Council’s Environment Committee, said: “At this time of year we need to adjust our collection schedule to accommodate the holidays. Our collection teams will be working hard over the festive period to ensure bins are emptied in accordance with the revised schedule. We know that at this time of year a lot of waste is generated and we are encouraging residents to recycle as much as they can.”

Residents can also reduce their waste by avoiding buying items with excessive packaging, planning food carefully and recycling. Food items, including turkey bones and sprouts, are to be placed in brown food waste bins. Other items such as cans, bottles, jars and wrapping paper made of paper (not plastic or foil wrapping paper) should be placed in blue bins.

Summers Lane Reuse and Recycling Centre, is open from 8.45am to 4.15pm every day except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. You can also donate items such as bikes, furniture and toys that are in good condition at the reuse shop which operates here every Tuesday (except 26 December and 2 January).

Residents are encouraged to recycle all they can during the festive period!
