Author Shares Ways to Thank People Aside From Just Saying ‘Thank You’
With his book, Pastor and widower Ralph Mosgrove hopes to inspire readers to go beyond in expressing their gratitude.
By going beyond “Thank you”, one could add more depth and soul to every word of gratitude being said.
“It is never enough to just say ‘Thank you‘,” said Mosgrove in his book “Saying Thanks and Beyond: Is Saying Thank You Enough?” (Archway Publishing, 2017). “There are also other ways of saying thanks.”
“Saying Thanks and Beyond” was born out of the author and his late wife Elsie’s tragedy. Elsie suffered a bad fall at the age of 77 and, despite medical attention, became disabled. Though they were traumatized by the experience, they were able to reflect on the kindness, generosity, patience, and self-denial of the people they encountered on their journey.
“I have determined that saying ‘Thank you’ is often an idle response to someone’s concern or desire to help,” the author said in his book, which explores ways to say thanks and beyond. “There are many ways to say ‘Thank you’ and learning ways it can be done is something most of us have given little thought to.”
While the author stresses the importance of saying “Thank you”, he exhorts his readers to go beyond those two words. Give a smile, speak words of encouragement, send a handwritten note – these are just some of the ways people could express their gratitude. The author also suggests adding phrases such as “That was such a big help,” “I couldn’t have made it without you,” and “You made my day.”
Expressing gratitude plus going beyond “Thank you” causes a ripple effect. A recipient of a “Thank you” will feel good about being appreciated and acknowledged. This will not only make them feel glad about taking the time to be gracious but also inspire them to pass on the “Thank you” they receive. “They are inspired to do it again, and you encouraged it by your ‘Thank you’,” said the author.
