Water Contamination Concerns in Puerto Rico Following Hurricane Damage

Even without the presence of Superfund sites, flooding, storm surge and damaged or broken wells, water storage facilities and basic plumbing issues have created water quality concerns for many who are fortunate enough to even have water coming out of their faucets.

Just a few months after Hurricanes Maria and Irma devastated property and infrastructure throughout much of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, health officials are currently working to try and assess the health effects caused by these natural disasters.

Earlier this month, Nature, an international scientific journal, published an article about the efforts of several researchers to document the health effects of drinking-water contamination, infectious disease and stress on pregnant women in Puerto Rico. The article discussed the islands’ 18 Superfund sites, many of which are located in areas with porous rock. This type of geological formation can allow hazardous chemicals from these sites to potentially migrate after hurricane flooding. This could, in some circumstances, result in toxic chemicals reaching people’s water supply.

“Even without the presence of Superfund sites, flooding, storm surge and damaged or broken wells, water storage facilities and basic plumbing issues have created water quality concerns for many who are fortunate enough to even have water coming out of their faucets,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “These water quality issues include biological, chemical and physical contaminants. At Zimmetry, our environmental professionals have been busy these past few months helping companies, institutions and families analyze not only indoor environmental quality concerns following all of the hurricane damage, but also testing people’s water quality. These tests can quickly determine if there are health concerns due to contaminants. Properties with lead or asbestos water pipes should also be tested to make sure any damage is not allowing these materials into the water supply.”

For those with water or indoor environmental quality concerns, Zimmetry provide comprehensive testing, consulting and mitigation services throughout Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and across the Caribbean. They have also sponsored an educational video about drinking water contaminant categories that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/P5vJ_AkBjP0
