The book “The Spirit of Crystal River” tells that problems, no matter how big and complicated, can be solved, and the best tools in solving them are teamwork, compassion, unity, and bravery.

The first bloodshed of American Civil War started on April 12,1861 with the Firing on Ft. Sumpter by April 19, 1861. President Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation to block ports within some states that withdrew from the Union. This is to protect the people and its peaceful environment including their properties.

The story depicts the lives not only of soldiers and government officials, but also the situation of the civilians during the American Civil War crisis. It also focuses on the situation aboard The Spirit scow navigating through the Crystal River of Florida.

Michael Petellat was born in Sarasota, Florida. He loves to hunt, explore the swamps, and fish. He served in the Army and eventually retired from the Clearwater Fire Department. Over the course of his career, he was the first Citrus County Fire Administrator as well as a park ranger at the Crystal River Archaeological State Park.
