UniCERT Provides Comprehensive, Scalable and Flexible PKI Solution for Finnish Government

LONDON - October 02, 2006 - Cybertrust®, the global information security specialist, today announced that its UniCERT® public key infrastructure (PKI) solution has been selected by The Population Register Centre of Finland as part of the country’s transition to an advanced biometric ePassport solution. The Population Register Centre operates under the Ministry of the Interior, which has the responsibility for local and regional administration, regional development and internal security in Finland. Biometric ePassport has been available in Finland since 21 st August 2006.

Cybertrust UniCERT certification technology provides the foundation for verifying and authenticating the validity of the biometric data on each passport.

The Population Register Centre’s biometric certification system is supplied and maintained by Fujitsu Services Oy in Finland. Fujitsu provides also the continued management, monitoring and application specialist services on the system.

“We decided to partner up with Cybertrust, because we consider its products best meet the high requirements of this solution ”, says department manager Björn-Eric Svensson of Fujitsu.

“The nature of the ePassport project required a partner with international reach that could offer a scalable and flexible solution,” said Tapio Aaltonen, the Director of The Population Register Centre. “Cybertrust was selected for its ability to leverage its global development capabilities and deliver a software solution that provides a trust authority for the passport issuers that is compliant with the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) as proven in passed ICAO compatibility tests, held in Berlin in early June 2006. Cybertrust UniCERT PKI solution is both geographically scalable and offers a modular infrastructure that will adapt as our ePassport system is deployed.”

According to John Holland, Cybertrust senior vice president and general manager, EMEA, “The global move to biometric passports has largely been driven by the United States, who made it compulsory for all travellers from countries that are part of the U.S. visa waiver program to have biometric identifiers in their passports. With clients such as the Australian government taking the lead with ePassport programs we anticipate to be at the heart of the ePassport initiative with our proven UniCERT certification technology.”
