Bassett Healthcare Chooses EMC CLARiiON CX3 Storage Platform for Increased Protection of and Rapid Access to Critical Patient and Business Information

Hopkinton, Mass.-Monday, September 25, 2006 - EMC Corporation, the world leader in information management and storage, today announced that Bassett Healthcare has chosen an EMC® CLARiiON® CX3-80 storage system to deliver more flexibility, scalability and performance to its information infrastructure. Based on the new EMC CLARiiON UltraScale™ architecture, the storage system will provide the foundation for Bassett Healthcare’s three-year strategic information technology initiative.

“Like other healthcare organizations, we’re faced with complex IT environments, compliance requirements and increasing demands for rapid access to critical patient and business information,” said Kenneth Deans, Bassett Healthcare’s Vice President and Chief Information Officer. “Our EMC information infrastructure delivers the high-capacity, high-performance and high-availability we need to ensure our physicians, nurses and staff have the information they need to provide quality patient care.”

Bassett Healthcare is an integrated healthcare delivery system of four hospitals and 23 community health centers serving residents of an eight-county region covering a 5,000 mile area in central New York. Recently, Bassett Healthcare embarked on a three-year strategic information technology plan to further enhance its consolidation, business continuity and ILM initiatives. To support these initiatives, Bassett Healthcare purchased a new CLARiiON CX3-80 storage system. This system is based on EMC’s new CLARiiON UltraScale architecture - the storage industry’s first available platform with full end-to-end 4 gigabit-per-second (Gb/s) Fibre Channel technology - and offers the organization additional options for tiered-storage, greater capacity and increased throughput of the growing healthcare data files accessed daily. Bassett Healthcare will utilize EMC SnapView™ software with the CLARiiON CX3-80 for its business continuity strategy to help meet its HIPAA Contingency Plan requirements. In addition, Bassett will transition additional systems such as their anesthesiology and surgical information systems data from IBM and HP systems to its new CLARiiON CX3-80.

“We want to increase throughput and capacity and strengthen our business continuity strategy – all while making the most of our existing EMC investments,” said Deans. “We were impressed with the performance of EMC CLARiiON CX3 system and its dual-tier ability to mix and match drives. It will be an essential part of our information infrastructure and our three-year IT plan.”

Prior to deploying the CLARiiON CX3-80, Bassett Healthcare used EMC hardware and software to support its core business activities including Microsoft and Lawson systems and its critical MEDITECH, McKesson, and Philips healthcare applications. Working with EMC Global Services, Bassett Healthcare deployed an information lifecycle management (ILM) strategy, which enables the organization to move information throughout the infrastructure based on its ever-changing value and business policies. Additionally, Bassett Healthcare uses EMC Centera™ content addressed storage to archive and manage its radiology and cardiology Picture Archiving Communications Systems (PACS) to enable caregivers to quickly access information to better serve patients.

“We strive to implement leading technologies from partners we trust,” said Deans. “For the last six years, EMC has delivered reliable technology and provided flawless service and support.”
