Siemens supplies electrical equipment for new hot-dip coating line TAGAL II in China

Erlangen, Sep 22, 2006 - The Siemens Industrial Solutions and Services (I&S) Group has received an order from TAGAL Co. Ltd., Dalian, to supply the electrical equipment for a new hot-dip coating line. The project includes the basic and process automation, the entire drive system as well as electrical infrastructure equipment. The order is worth around 10 million euros and the coating line is scheduled to start operations at the beginning of 2008.

TAGAL is a 50:50 joint venture of the German company ThyssenKrupp Steel, Duisburg and Angang New Steel Co., Anshan, China. Since December 2003, the joint venture company has been operating a hot-dip coating line in the north-Chinese port city of Dalian, with an annual capacity of 400,000 metric tons of thin steel sheet. The new coating line is intended to double the production of high-quality hot-dip coated steel sheet meeting the demanding surface requirements of the automotive and household appliance industries, the main customers for these products.

For the new line to be built, Siemens is supplying all the main and auxiliary drives in AC technology as well as the basic and process automation, including the technological control systems for the built-in skin-pass mill and stretch leveler. The project also includes HMI equipment with user-friendly process and plant diagnostic functions as well as interfaces to the SAP system and to already existing parts of the plant. Automation will be based on “Siroll PL”, the automation concept for strip-processing lines, and on programmable controllers of the type Simatic S7. Standardized application modules will be used for programming purposes and thus facilitate commissioning and later maintenance work. Furthermore, Siemens will install the low voltage distribution and motor control centers (MCCs), and extend the existing medium voltage distribution to the new coating line. The scope of services includes project management and engineering and site management as well as expediting and supervising of sub-suppliers. Siemens will also be responsible for commissioning and start-up of the new line, and will conduct performance tests in order to make sure the new line meets guaranteed key performance indicators (KPIs)

The new hot-dip coating plant will be built by a consortium consisting of the Belgium companies CMI, Seraing, and Drever International, Liège. Siemens China will manage the project in collaboration with Siemens I&S, Erlangen.

The main reasons why the contract was awarded to Siemens were the latter’s technological competence relating to strip-processing lines and its local presence in Beijing. This will not only guarantee proximity to the customer during the project but will also ensure the efficient provision of support services once commissioning has been completed.
