Enthralling Book Inspired by an Extraordinary Woman

Matilda Joslyn Gage was a feminist, speaker, and writer in the 1850s. She was one of the exceptional women who fought for women’s suffrage. Truly moved by Gage’s life, Susan Savion honors Gage through her book, Quoting Matilda.  The book was displayed at LitFire’s booth during the New York State Reading Association Combined Book Expo on November 13–14, 2016 in Rochester.

Brought up in a family of abolitionists, Gage always had the makings of an activist. Being deeply influenced by her father and at the same time fascinated with Mary Wollstonecraft turned her into a brave advocate in pursuit of social justice and gender equality.

Savion tells the life story of Gage using the quotes she used in her speeches and dialogues. Jo Anne Bakeman says, “[the book] is well-written, and truly enhances a deep understanding of the issues of the women’s rights movement.” Savion did an excellent job in capturing the life of a brave woman who made a difference in all women’s lives.

About the Author

Susan Savion spent most of her career as a teacher. She has published poems and authored four teacher resource books. She also chairs the Green Sanctuary Committee at May Memorial Unitarian Universalist Society and edits a newsletter.
