New York Residents Advised of the Common Signs and Symptoms of Lead Poisoning in Children

New York, NY – WEBWIRE

Identifying lead exposure risks and preventing children and adults from these hazards is the only way to avert new cases of lead poisoning.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that at least 4 million households have children living in them that are being exposed to high levels of lead. The CDC also states that there are approximately half a million U.S. children ages 1-5 with blood lead levels above 5 micrograms per deciliter (µg/dL), the reference level at which the CDC recommends public health actions be initiated.

Lead exposure in New York and the surrounding tri-state area has been an ongoing concern for years. It is major health issue due to the number of homes and buildings that were constructed before the use of lead-based paints was banned in the late 1970s. Drinking water is another potential exposure source as lead was sometimes used in the past in household plumbing materials or in water service lines.

Although exposure to lead can be detrimental to people of all ages, it is particularly harmful to the developing brain and nervous system of fetuses and young children. Lead exposure can affect nearly every system in the body and the CDC has proclaimed that no safe blood lead level in children has been identified.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) provides the following list of possible signs and symptoms of even low levels of lead in children.

  • Behavior and Learning Problems
  • Lower IQ and Hyperactivity
  • Slowed Growth
  • Hearing Problems
  • Anemia

“Identifying lead exposure risks and preventing children and adults from these hazards is the only way to avert new cases of lead poisoning,” said Michael Berrevoets, President, VOETS, LLC. “Lead exposure can also occur with no obvious symptoms, so it can go unrecognized for some time. At VOETS we offer comprehensive lead testing services, conducted by certified lead inspectors and risk assessors, to protect families, the public, and workers. These services also help to keep landlords, property managers, and companies in compliance with government lead regulations.”
