In September, a company out of California announced that they were recalling 15,000 cases of canned vegetables due to trace amounts of potential shellfish contamination. The products included green beans and field peas, which were shipped to over 22 states in 106 ounce metal cans.

The Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004 (FALCPA) requires that food labels clearly identify the food source names of all ingredients that are, or contain any protein derived from, the eight most common food allergens. FALCPA defines these as “major food allergens” and they account for 90% of allergic reactions to foods. This group is comprised of crustacean shellfish, fish, milk, eggs, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat and soybeans.

People with food allergies who consume products containing allergens can experience a severe, life-threatening allergic reaction called anaphylaxis. The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) reports that each year it is estimated that anaphylaxis caused by these allergens results in 30,000 emergency room visits, 2,000 hospitalizations and 150 deaths in the United States.

“There is no cure for food allergies, so strict avoidance of food allergens is essential for people with these types of allergies,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “At LA Testing, we help food manufacturers avoid costly product recalls and protect consumers who have food allergies from products that contain allergens through comprehensive food testing services in our network of laboratories. These services are essential for confirming raw ingredients and final products, as well as conforming to labeling requirements.”
