Cincinnati, Oh – WEBWIRE

The Save Babies Through Screening Foundation is proud to announce the appointment of Ruth Caruthers as Secretary. Ruth’s journey with Newborn Screening advocacy began with a blog. Her son Corbin was in the hospital for heart surgery; he was only 9 days old for his first procedure. Scouring the internet to educate herself on her son’s condition, she encountered more and more parents who had gone through the same journey, and had words of wisdom and encouragement to share. Some stories did not have happy endings. While searching for information on “pulse oximetry, she came across a story that would change her life. It was the story of a mom whose daughter had died from undetected heart defects and had went on to pass a bill in her state that required heart defect screening, or pulse oximetry. She read her words, and with tears running down her face, she realized that this would be her road and mission as well.

Ruth’s dear little Peanut, Corbin would not survive his third heart surgery. His broken heart stopped on May 17th, 2011, just three months after he graced this world. It was just 8 months later when she and two other “heart moms”, with the help of the American Heart Association, introduced West Virginia’s first pulse ox bill. With the grace of God and thousands of supporters, the bill passed a very quick three months later. Heart defect screening is now mandatory in WV as of January 1st, 2013.

Since passing the bill Ruth has worked with Baby’s First Test, advocating in Washington multiple times. She has also advocated from inside the White House, traveled to New York to work with NYMAC, traveled to Baltimore for newborn screening meeting with the APHL, and has volunteered with Save Babies since January 2014. She also created her own nonprofit in honor of her son and she helps run a local child loss support group.
