Retired Pastor Ministers Talks About Saving Inmates in His Book Displayed in Asia

The Beijing International Book Fair had recently concluded its 23rd edition last August 24–28, 2016. The fair was held at the China International Exhibition Center. Among the books that were presented during the event was Harvey Thomas’s The Key to Freedom from Captivity.

At the age of seventy, Harvey became involved in the country’s prison system. He was asked by a parishioner to visit the latter’s grandson, who was being held in the Washington County jail. On his way out of that unforgettable trip, a prison guard stopped him and asked if he could spare a few extra minutes because another prisoner wanted to talk to a pastor. He agreed. From that point on, he was part of the prison system. In his book, he writes his almost fifteen-year experience as a prison minister.

Harvey aims to convey to the readers that inmates are not bad people, but people who need to be helped. “The main thing I want to show to the public is a different view of prisons,” he said.

About the Author

Harvey A. Thomas was born in Somerville, Massachusetts. He got married to Norma Lee Newton and had two children. He is a holder of a bachelor’s degree of arts in theology. He received his ordination from the Pine Flats Baptist Churches. He served as pastor in the First Baptist Church in Bentleyville. He retired from full-time pastoral ministry in 2000.
