In August, California’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) added 1-bromopropane (CAS No. 106-94-5) to the list of chemicals known to the state to cause cancer for purposes of Proposition 65. The listing of 1-bromopropane (1-BP) was based on formal identification by the National Toxicology Program (NTP) that the chemical causes cancer.

1-BP is a solvent that is used in degreasing, dry cleaning, spray adhesives and aerosol solvents. The Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) reports that the use of 1-BP has increased in workplaces over the past 20 years and that it is often found in products used in:

  • Vapor and immersion degreasing operations for cleaning metals, plastics, electronic and optical components
  • Adhesive spray applications
  • Dry cleaning
  • Solvent sprays used in operations like asphalt production, aircraft maintenance and synthetic fiber manufacturing

“As with many industrial solvents, workers in industries that utilize these compounds can be exposed to it by breathing mists or vapors and if it comes into contact with their skin,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility.  “OSHA reports that 1-BP exposures can cause irritation and damage to the nervous system. They also state that animal studies show that 1-BP may cause cancer and reproductive disorders.”

Cal-OSHA has adopted a time-weighted average permissible exposure limit (PEL) for 1-BP and LA Testing is working to protect the public and employees from exposure risks. Using comprehensive analytical services and all of the sampling supplies necessary to submit samples, they help businesses comply with health and safety regulations.
