Today Bill Milliken, a widely-respected local commercial Realtor, announced his decision to stand for election in November for one of the two board of trustee seats on the ballot for Washtenaw Community College.

Bill has been on the board of the Washtenaw Community College Foundation for five years, awarding scholarships to students and grants to faculty and students for innovative learning projects.  He also serves on the board of New Detroit, working to re-position the Detroit Public Schools so that Detroit kids have a better shot at a good education and a bright future.

“Running for WCC Trustee seems like a natural next step, given my interest and experience in advocating for educational excellence and workforce development,” said Bill.

About 13,000 students from 100 countries attend the College, many of whom ultimately take advantage of transfer agreements to attend the University of Michigan or Eastern Michigan University. Another 20,000 people take non-credit and enrichment courses at WCC each year.

“The job of a Trustee is to set policy that enables the faculty and staff to provide all of our students with the best possible learning environment.  With good listening and problem solving skills, and no agenda, I am in an ideal position to do just that,”  Bill said. “Trustees are also responsible for financial oversight, a task for which running my own business - Ann Arbor-based Milliken Realty Co. - has prepared me well,” he added.

Bill Milliken has an extensive history of community involvement. He was chair of the Washtenaw Development Council, a founding Director of Ann Arbor SPARK, served as board chair for Planned Parenthood of Mid- Michigan, and co-founded the Professional Volunteer Corps.  He has also served as chair of the Ann Arbor Chamber of Commerce, participated in Christmas in April, and helped Habitat for Humanity build homes in Ypsilanti and rebuild homes in post-Katrina New Orleans.

Bill served as President of the Michigan Realtors in 2013, holds a seat on the board of the 1.2 million member National Association of Realtors (NAR), and was elected regional vice-president of NAR in 2016.  He was named Realtor-of-the-Year by the Michigan Commercial Board of Realtors (2006).

Bill Milliken is a lifelong Michigan resident.  Born in Traverse City, he has lived in Ann Arbor since 1988.  He is a graduate of Colorado College, and enjoys Pure Michigan in his Sunfish on West Bay and time on the slopes at Boyne Mountain.  Bill often commutes to work by bike.  He has traveled to all 50 states, numerous foreign countries and is a licensed private pilot.
