EMSL Radiochemistry Lab Offers Electron Capture Detector (ECD) Leak Test
EMSL Analytical, Inc. has expanded radiological testing services to include ECD leak tests to accommodate required regular testing of the sealed source.
EMSL Analytical, Inc.’s Radiological Laboratory Division now offers a leak test for the electron capture detector (ECD) which is a commonly used device in gas chromatograph instruments. An ECD typically contains 10-15 millicuries of nickel-63, which is a sealed radioactive source. In order to ensure safety, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) requires that each licensee who uses a sealed source should have the source tested for leakage every six months and track the results for three years after the leak test is performed.
EMSL can assist organizations that have instruments containing radioactive materials or have the potential to release radioactive particles with this specific testing. The gas chromatography with electron capture detector (GC-ECD) is a common instrument that requires routine testing.
