California Parents Warned of Children’s Water Bottle Recall Due to Lead Concerns
LA Testing offers analytical services to identify lead and other heavy metals in consumer products to protect the public and prevent costly product recalls.
In July, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) posted information about a product recall of insulated water bottles marketed to children. Thousands of the 13.5 ounce water bottles were reportedly sold between July of 2015 and May of this year. The bottles were available from one of the nation’s oldest outdoor apparel and supply companies via their retail stores, catalogues and website.
The reason for the recall, according to the CPSC news release, was due to solder at the exterior base of the bottle that contained high levels of lead. Lead is toxic if ingested by young children and can cause a wide range of adverse health issues. The bottles contained the following color prints: camouflage, butterflies, sharks, flowers and dinosaur bones.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that there are no safe blood lead levels in children and that this toxic metal can affect nearly every system in the body. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), lead poisoning is one of the most serious environmental health threats to children in the United States.
“Too many young children are at high risk for lead poisoning,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “The good news is that lead poisoning is entirely preventable and fortunately in this case, CPSC has not reported any incidents or injuries yet. At LA Testing, we provide lead testing of consumer products to protect people’s health and to prevent these types of costly product recalls from occurring. Comprehensive testing of consumer products before they are offered to the public is essential. LA Testing also provides environmental testing for lead in paints, dusts, soil and water.”
