Retired teacher Rosalie H. Contino shares the story of her brother, Bob, who was diagnosed with mild schizophrenia and suffered through physical ailments, in her book, As Life Goes On.

In her book, Contino recalls receiving a harsh phone call from Bob’s boss. She was told that Bob was strongly advised to retire since he had “outlived his usefulness.” At that time, Bob was working as a mailroom clerk. She talks of her brother’s love for his job and his reluctance to retire.

Contino shares how she and her brother weathered through the ups and downs of Bob’s illness. She writes about the dreams that she placed on hold for Bob and the emotional upheaval she went through every hospital visit. As Life Goes On conveys valuable life lessons learned from the challenges of living in the midst of sickness.

As Life Goes On: Lessons One Doesn’t Want to Have to Learn will be featured in the 2016 New England Library Association Annual Conference on October 16 to 18 at Hilton DoubleTree, Danvers, Massachusetts.
