“Stunning, well-written story about an unusual part of the country. I loved the characters, the dynamics between the high school football players and the town, including the churches that support their "sons in football" and "sons in the faith."

We all have to make a decision at some point in our life. It’s not going to be easy even if it’s just a minor choice. How much more if you have to make a choice that can possibly change your life? That’s the dilemma presented by Gary Reiswig in his novel entitled Water Boy.

In a legendary town of Cimarron, Oklahoma, people are obsessed with football and fundamentalist religion. And among these quirky townspeople, there are two young men who are so different in many ways yet they have become close friends. Danny, the quarterback, wants to lead the team in a state championship and everyone thinks he can do it. On the other hand, Sonny, the water boy, doesn’t like the violence of football but still finds a way to help the team.

Until one day, the townspeople have to choose between their two obsessions. Everyone is baffled, especially the main characters of the story. In the end, what will be more important to them? Will it be the glory of a state championship or the glory in heaven? That’s what you have to find out.

The book has received a lot of two-thumbs-up reviews from both critics and readers. According to a review by Publisher’s Weekly, “Despite its deceptively simple opening, this first novel about coming of age in 1950s Oklahoma gradually turns into a lurid, albeit fairly compelling, drama of adultery, murder, lust, child abuse and redemption.”

Another review posted by Kimberly A. Norgard said, “Stunning, well-written story about an unusual part of the country. I loved the characters, the dynamics between the high school football players and the town, including the churches that support their “sons in football” and “sons in the faith.”
