EMSL Canada, Inc. is proud to announce that its Montreal laboratory has received accreditation by the Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program (ELAP) for Method 198.4 for asbestos in non-friable material by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) (Lab: 12043). To date, EMSL is the only laboratory in Quebec to hold this accreditation and service capability.

The ELAP Method 198.4 is the TEM method for analysis of asbestos in non-friable organically bound (NOB) material such as floor tiles, roofing materials, mastics and caulking. This analysis is required in order to classify samples as non-asbestos-containing material (ACM).

“The IRSST analytical method of Quebec requires that all floor tiles with trace amounts or no asbestos detected by PLM be analyzed using the ELAP 198.4 method, which allows for the detection and quantification of very fine asbestos fibers,” said Lemma Mohammad, Regional Manager and Montreal Laboratory Director at EMSL Canada, Inc. “The ELAP method involves gravimetric reduction of the samples (matrix removal) prior to analysis using TEM. IRSST also recommends the use of this method for other non-friable organically bound materials as well.”

EMSL Montreal is also accredited by the National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program (NVLAP) for bulk asbestos analysis. The laboratory also offers microbiology laboratory services.

EMSL Canada’s five testing laboratories located in Calgary, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver offer asbestos analysis as well as a wide range of additional testing services.
