Earlier in February, the superintendent of the Klamath Trinity Joint Unified School District announced that all schools within the district would be closed for a week. The school district in California’s Humboldt County made the decision due to the discovery of mold. The unexpected closure took place from February 8th through the 12th.

A message from Superintendent Jon Ray was posted to the district’s website that read in part: “Effective today, we are required to take immediate health and safety measures involving remediation due to mold. These health and safety measures also include immediate evacuation and closure of several classrooms, cafeterias and kitchens that will affect all campuses. Therefore, we are forced to cancel school all of next week.”

Children and faculty that are exposed to elevated levels of mold may experience health issues. Molds produce allergens, irritants and in some cases, toxic substances known as mycotoxins. Inhaling or touching mold or mold spores may cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals, and the mold does not have to be alive to cause an allergic reaction. Exposure to mold can even trigger asthma attacks in people with asthma who are allergic to mold. As an irritant, mold can impact the eyes, skin, nose, throat and lungs of individuals whether or not they are allergic to it. Breathing mold may also cause hypersensitivity pneumonitis, a disease that resembles bacterial pneumonia. In addition, exposure to certain types of mold, such as Aspergillus, may result in opportunistic infections in people with a weakened or suppressed immune system.

“When mold is found growing indoors it’s important to identify the cause which will involve moisture or elevated humidity levels,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Garden Grove facility.  “If the cause is not addressed the mold will return in most circumstances.”
