Understanding the Passing of a Pet through “The Time of My Life”

Author Karen Nicksich uses her story book, The Time of My Life, to help children understand the passing of a pet.

The Time of My Life is a story about Anna, a young girl who lives at the Lilac Doggie Rescue Ranch with her family. It talks about how she, as well as the other animals in the ranch, copes with the death of their furry loved one, Dante, an old Golden Retriever.

The book has received positive feedback from its readers. “A beautiful story explaining the death of a pet to a child with caring and spirituality,” Robin Donoho said in her review. She further adds that the illustrations are beautiful and that the book gives opportunities for open conversation and creativity.

“Everyone who had lost a pet before can relate to this book. Children who are mourning the loss of a pet can mostly benefit from reading the story,” muses Nicksich.

Readers have checked out the book at LitFire’s booth during the 2015 Guadalajara International Book Fair held last November 28 to December 6. The event was held at the Expo Guadalajara exhibition center in Jalisco Mexico.

Karen Nicksich was a teacher for almost thirty-five years. She attended college in Colorado and holds a gifted and talented education endorsement. She grew up in Upstate New York. Currently, Karen is living in Richland, Washington with her family and their two dogs.
