Indoor Allergens in Los Angeles Homes Can Cause Severe Allergies and Other Respiratory Conditions

In September, California’s KPPC published a report about South Los Angeles apartments and indoor environmental pollutants that were associated with severe allergic reactions, respiratory illnesses and even asthma in children. The report highlighted several families with children who suffered repeated illnesses that eventually resulted in health professionals visiting their homes.  

The homes consisted of low income apartments that suffered from a myriad of unhealthy conditions. The article discusses water damage and mold growth present in many situations. Cockroach infestations were another common problem. The healthcare professionals visiting these homes would first look for indoor environmental triggers for the conditions the children were suffering from and then try to develop a plan to remove those triggers.
