Chasing the Northern Lights in Iceland – a 4 day trek

The northern lights are one of many spectacular sights to see on a winter tour of Iceland. In a country filled with glaciers, volcanoes, waterfalls, geysers, black sand beaches and icebergs, it can be challenging to do and see it all in one visit. TREK Iceland delivers it all in an unforgettable 4 day Northern Lights Trek, where each day begins hiking in Iceland and ends chasing the northern lights in the Highlands.

Accompanied by an experienced guide, guests spend the first day of the action-packed trip exploring the geysers, waterfalls and tectonic plates of Iceland’s famous Golden Circle, take a hike up the glacier Solheimajökull, and drive off-road into the astounding Thorsmörk valley.

On the second day, visitors set out on the Fimmvörðuháls trail and hike through the rugged nature to Thorsmörk valley between the two glaciers Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull. Explorers will walk on the warm lava from the 2010 volcano eruption, and marvel at the surrounding glaciers and snow-capped mountains.

The third day is spent on one of Iceland’s most famous hiking trails – Laugavegur trek – where guests will explore the caramelized mountains and dense birch forest of Thorsmörk valley along breathtaking canyons. And on the way back to Reykjavík on the fourth day, visitors will stop and explore the Gígjökull glacier as well as the Seljalandsfoss waterfall before arriving in the city mid-afternoon.

At night, guests sleep in a cozy mountain hut in the Highlands where meals are provided. Throughout the four day trek, guests hike an average of 10-20 km and glacier equipment is included.
