COPD Affects Over 1 Million California Residents

LA Testing provides indoor environmental quality testing services and sampling supplies to identify air contaminants that can exacerbate COPD.

Garden Grove, CA – WEBWIRE

According to a 2011 report from the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research, approximately 1.1 million California adults are affected by Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, also known as COPD. COPD refers to a group of diseases that cause airflow blockage and breathing-related problems. It includes emphysema, chronic bronchitis and, in some cases, asthma. The report goes on to state that although a third of adults with COPD in California are 65 years old or older, a quarter are under the age of 45.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports, “In the United States, tobacco smoke is a key factor in the development and progression of COPD, although exposure to air pollutants in the home and workplace, genetic factors, and respiratory infections also play a role.” In addition to avoiding tobacco smoke, many buildings and homes have conditions or indoor air quality pollutants, irritants and allergens that may aggravate COPD in people suffering from the condition. These may include:

  • Mold & Bacteria
  • Dust Mites & Dusty Conditions
  • Pet Dander
  • Pollen
  • Scented Soaps, Shampoos & Perfumes
  • Fumes from Cleaning & Other Chemicals
  • Dry Cleaning Chemicals
  • Smoke from Fireplaces & Wood Stoves
  • Dirty HVAC Ducts & Carpeting
  • Outdoor Pollution that Infiltrates a Property

“For people who suffer from COPD, it’s important that their home and work environment does not have elevated levels of these pollutants to keep their condition from being aggravated,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Garden Grove facility. “At LA Testing, we offer laboratory services, sampling supplies, test kits and monitoring equipment to identify airborne contaminants to help COPD patients manage their condition.”
