Three years ago, Hurricane Sandy left a path of destruction along the coast of both New Jersey and New York.  Many of the homes and businesses damaged by the historic hurricane have been rebuilt, but some still remain damaged.

Now residents from the Mid-Atlantic up through New England are bracing themselves for the possible landfall of Hurricane Joaquin, which was recently upgraded to a Category 4 hurricane.  In preparation, many people along the coast have begun activities to protect their homes and businesses.  The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) provides the following checklist for homeowners to avoid hurricane damage, it includes:

•    Know the Risk
•    Buy Flood Insurance
•    Install Hurricane Straps
•    Install and Maintain Storm Shutters
•    Install a Generator for Emergencies
•    Reinforce Garage Doors
•    Anchor or Remove Potential Windborne Objects
•    Remove Trees that Could Damage a Property

“People who live along the nation’s coastlines are at greatest risk of experiencing the damaging effects of a hurricane, but even those who live further inland could also be in harm’s way,” said Joseph Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc.  “Many properties survive the onslaught from a powerful hurricane, but are left with slight to severe damage.  These properties can be rebuilt, but there are often indoor environmental hazards people need to be aware of before they begin removing the damage and making repairs.”

Potential indoor environmental hazards commonly encountered in hurricane damaged properties include mold, sewage, bacteria, viruses, chemicals, asbestos and lead. EMSL has sponsored an online video about avoiding indoor environmental hazards following a hurricane that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/kEpmo3Z-wJA

For people with properties damaged by a hurricane or other natural disaster, EMSL offers a comprehensive range of indoor environmental testing services and sampling supplies to protect building occupants.  They also offer a series of easy-to-use test kits that are available at: www.EMSLTestKits.com.
