Generation gap in the workplace: Unify not divide your workforce

Digital technology has changed the way we live, so much so that educational specialist Marc Prensky said in 2001 that anyone born since the late 1980s was surrounded by new digital technology so much that it changed the way their brain worked, thus making them a so-called “Digital Native”.

Such is the prominence of technology in our everyday lives that face-to-face contact is no longer necessary in many business circles, but this had led to a generation gap in the workplace. However, key thinkers from Computacenter believe generational differences do not need to have a negative impact on the working environment, rather businesses need to look at how to use generational diversity in the workplace to unify the generations in their ranks.

The theory that having to do one thing for the young and another for the not so young is not the way forward, says Computacenter’s Colin, who insists this will only alienate people and turn some into “digital delinquents”. Empathy is key to ensuring everyone interacts easily, adds Pete, who notes that this will ensure work gets done and, in turn, money is generated for businesses.

The customer is, of course, key and ensuring they get what they need when and where they need it is crucial. Empowering employees, Digital Natives or not, with the environment and tools required to assist the customer is vital not only for the latter, but also the former. The result being that businesses will see improved performance and better retention of talent as staff feel more valued.
