Postecom Selects Cybertrust UniCERT to Protect Integrity and Security of Local Government Communication across Europe

WEBWIRE

Milan - September 08, 2006 - Postecom, a company of Poste Italiane Group, has selected a UniCERT® public key infrastructure (PKI) certification solution from Cybertrust®, the global information security specialist, to ensure the secure transfer of sensitive and confidential information between European local governments and external sources.

Postecom recently won the European Union (EU) Tender for Contract for the Interoperable Delivery of European eGovernment Services to public Administrations, Businesses and Citizens (IDABC) project. This promotes the use of information and communications technologies to improve efficiency and collaboration between multiple site locations.

Postecom chose UniCERT, the Cybertrust PKI software that issues digital certificates compliant with the European Directive 1999/93/CE, to deliver the PKI certification platform that would help secure and assure the integrity of this collaborative project.

“Cybertrust’s involvement in this important eGovernment project will allow Postecom to develop a high-quality, innovative PKI system that will secure data and increase efficiency in local government communications,” explains Roberto Palumbo, Postecom Business Unit Manager.

PKI digital certification secures applications, communications and transactions, allowing for privacy, integrity and authenticity of the document and of the author’s identity. Local governments joining the IDABC Project will be able to issue digital certificates to internal users working across multiple locations or to people externally.

“Sensitive and private information like that exchanged between the general public, private organisations and local governments are at risk of being intercepted or modified unless adequately secured,” said Pietro Riva, Cybertrust Southern Europe Operations Manager. “For these reasons, we believe that the collaboration with Postecom is particularly important as it is part of a far-reaching project able to support cooperation among multiple European public institutions.”

UniCERT provides a comprehensive trust environment for any electronic communication or transaction by leveraging public key cryptography in an enterprise or community-wide security infrastructure that is virtually transparent to the end user. Customers such as Postecom benefit through lower administrative costs, a business security policy that maps to business practices, an open interface to third-party products, and a minimized risk due to security breaches.
