Fair Food is a Big Part of San Mateo County Fair’s Summer Fun & Memories

The San Mateo County Fair returns on June 6-14 and the 81st Annual event has long held fond memories ranging from riding Ferris wheels to seeing live concerts on warm summer nights to eating arguably some of the tastiest food the Bay Area has to offer.

When putting together the food vendors and concessions at the Fair, we have many favorites that have been with us for years such as Bubba’s Barbeque and Funnel Cakes. Last year, we introduced the Cajun Booth and their crawfish and seafood gumbo were big hits. This year our new additions are fried kool-aid and alligator on a stick,” said SVP & General Manager of San Mateo County Event Center Chris Carpenter.

The San Mateo County Fair returns on June 6-14 and the 81st Annual event has long held fond memories ranging from riding Ferris wheels to seeing live concerts on warm summer nights to eating arguably some of the tastiest food the Bay Area has to offer.

The San Mateo County Fair has always been at the center of innovation, known for introducing new delicacies and showcasing specific regional foods. We had some of the original “food trucks” where fairgoers could sample and taste a variety of national, international, ethnic and sometimes eccentric cuisine.  These dining experiences can include a plate piled high with a delicious pulled pork sandwich, corn on the cob, baked beans and cole slaw, Thai food, carne asada tacos, seafood gumbo and even alligator on a stick. Some of the sweeter concoctions include fried oreos, fried kool-aid, and served with dozens of refreshment choices from craft brewed beers to fresh squeezed lemonades and limeades.

Since the Fair’s inception in 1926 the Fair has served delicious sandwiches, gallons of craft brewed beer, and countless funnel cakes – still the most popular dessert at the fair next to cinnamon sticky buns. In recent years, healthy eating has gained popularity and this positive trend has been embraced by the Fair inviting many of the concessions to create a healthy option for each of their menus. The San Mateo County Health Department worked closely with the Fair last year to help expand the “healthy food fare” program that is especially popular with moms who want to make a day of the Fair, but want to have healthy options for their family.

There are over 200 choices for food and beverages at the Fair. Create a plan to try as many as possible by teaming up with a friend or group and sampling your way throughout the grounds. One method is to schedule breakfast and brunch type cuisine and share it with your friends at the large tables provided near the center stage (by the pig races), while another is to use the alphabet and work your way throughout the grounds A (candied apple), B (Baked Cinnamon sticky bun C (corn on the cob), D (doughnuts), E (Étouffée from the New Orleans booth, F (fried oreos, funnel cakes, kool aid) and so on. No matter how you create your Fair food experience we know it will be a delicious one you won’t soon forget!
