Newborns and young children are especially vulnerable to chemical and biological pollutants.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), almost 43,000 babies are born in Puerto Rico each year.  For the parents of these newborns, one of the primary tasks they need to accomplish before the birth of their child is getting the nursery ready for the new edition to the family.

As moms and dads shop for baby clothes, furniture and accessories, and begin decorating the nursery for the new arrival, the health and safety of the room’s future occupant should be of the outmost importance.  Since newborns and young children spend so much time in their rooms, a critical component of this includes the indoor air quality (IAQ) and indoor environmental quality (IEQ) of the nursery.

Common things, like painting a nursery, can lead to high levels of airborne chemicals such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs).  New baby furniture can also off-gas VOCs from their components, paints, finishes, adhesives and glues.  Some manufactured wood products are also associated with high levels of formaldehyde.  Even the baby’s mattresses can be source of VOCs, flame retardants and other chemicals.

New carpeting or wood floors in a nursery can also be a source of VOCs.   Carpeting can act as a “sink” for chemical and biological pollutants, including pesticides, mold, dust mites and other materials.  Anything that is tracked onto, or settles into carpeting, can become lodged.  Even VOCs can be absorbed into some types of carpet fibers.

“Newborns and young children are especially vulnerable to chemical and biological pollutants,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental.  “A newborn’s home, and especially their nursery, should provide a healthy indoor environment.   At Zimmetry, our indoor environmental quality experts offer testing and consulting services to identify and resolve issues involving chemical, biological and material concerns, such as lead-based paints and asbestos, that could pose a health risk for newborns.”

Zimmetry recently sponsored an educational video about baby rooms, nurseries and indoor environmental quality issues that can be seen at: http://youtu.be/XAIfYYn690s
