AHN Expands Thoracic Surgery Program in Southern Pittsburgh Communities

Allegheny Health Network is expanding its thoracic surgery program in the southern Pittsburgh communities. Mathew A. Van Deusen, MD, FACS, a fellowship-trained thoracic surgeon with specialty expertise in thoracic surgical oncology and minimally invasive/robotic thoracic surgery, has joined the Jefferson Hospital medical staff and has opened offices in Jefferson Hills, Uniontown and the Peters Township Health + Wellness Pavilion.

Dr. Van Deusen joins the team of experienced surgeons at Allegheny Health Network’s Esophageal & Lung Institute who are further establishing AHN’s lung and esophageal disease program as one of the country’s foremost centers for innovative, patient-centered care. He practices with the physicians of McGinnis Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgical Associates.

He received his medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, Pa., and his Bachelor of Science degree from Saint Francis College in Loretto, Pa.  Dr. Van Deusen completed his general surgical internship and residency at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pa., and subsequently completed his cardiothoracic fellowship there as well.

His research interests include specialized treatments for lung and esophageal cancers, lung cancer screening, and as a primary investigator, he is involved in several national and local clinical trials. 

He is certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.  He is an active member in the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the General Thoracic Surgical Club, the American College of Surgeons and the Eastern Cardiothoracic Surgery Society.

Dr. Van Deusen has medical staff privileges, sees patients and performs thoracic surgery at Allegheny General, Allegheny Valley, Canonsburg, Forbes, Jefferson and West Penn Hospitals.  He is welcoming patients at his new office locations in Jefferson Hills (412.469.7030), Uniontown (412.469.7030) and Peters Township Health + Wellness Pavilion (412.359.6137).
