California Introduces New C-22 Asbestos Abatement Classification

Clark Seif Clark (CSC) offers testing and consulting services to help identify and prevent human exposure to asbestos and other potentially hazardous materials.

Chatsworth, CA – WEBWIRE

It’s important for those providing asbestos abatement services and those in need of these services to be aware of the new C-22 classification.

On January 1st, California’s new C-22 Asbestos Abatement Contractor Classification went into effect.  This new classification does not replace the existing §7058.5 asbestos certification and a contractor can hold either of these asbestos abatement work authorizations, depending on their licensure needs.

According to the California Contractors State License Board (CSLB), “The C-22 Asbestos Abatement contractor classification operates as a stand-alone specialty contractor classification for asbestos abatement work, regardless of any other classification(s) that may be held by the licensed contractor, and functions within the scope of the contractor’s DOSH registration.”

The CSLB lists experience requirements for the C-22 as the following:

As with all CSLB general and specialty classifications, every applicant for the C-22 Asbestos Abatement classification must have had, within the last 10 years immediately preceding submission of the application, not less than four (4) years of experience performing asbestos abatement duties as a journeyman, foreman, supervising employee, or contractor. Experience is documented on the Certification of Work Experience form and must have been gained by working for or as any of the following:

1.      A licensed contractor who holds the C-22 Asbestos Abatement classification or the BPC §7058.5 asbestos certification and DOSH registration;
2.      A contractor who provides asbestos abatement services and is licensed in another state or federal jurisdiction;
3.      A utility company operating under the laws of a state or federal regulatory agency;
4.      A division of a state or the federal government; or
5.      The armed forces of the United States.

“It’s important for those providing asbestos abatement services and those in need of these services to be aware of the new C-22 classification,” said Franco Seif, President of Clark Seif Clark.  “Exposure to asbestos is known to cause lung cancer, asbestosis and mesothelioma in some people.  Due to potential asbestos exposure risks, abatement work needs to be done by those who are properly trained and licensed.  At Clark Seif Clark, we offer asbestos testing and consulting services to identify and help mitigate exposure risks associated with asbestos in residential, commercial and institutional properties.”
