Telenor Satellite Services chooses Nera SatCom for Ground Earth Stations upgrade.

Nera SatCom has signed a contract with Telenor Satellite Services for the upgrade of Telenor’s aeronautical satellite Ground Earth Stations at Eik, Norway and Santa Paula, California in the United States. The contract is worth NOK 40.8 million (approximately $6.5 million).

“This is one of the largest contracts of its kind in Nera SatCom’s history. We are proud to play this role in Telenor’s investment in the growing aeronautical satellite business and to further strengthen Nera SatCom’s 30 years of cooperation with Telenor,” comments Stig-Are Mogstad, President & CEO, Nera SatCom.

“Telenor Satellite Services is making significant investment in our Eik and Santa Paula stations in order to expand our aeronautical business and to accommodate new applications to the aeronautical industry,” said Morten Tengs, chief executive officer for Telenor Satellite Services.

The Ground Earth Stations to be upgraded by Nera SatCom have been providing aeronautical services since 1990 and enable telephony, fax, and packet switched data services between the terrestrial network and aircraft. The services are available for cockpit, crew, and passengers.

The contract entails an upgrade of the Ground Earth Stations through the installation of new equipment that enhances operations in satellite ‘spot-beams’ (smaller cells of satellite coverage areas.) The upgrade also provides scalability in terms of a substantial extension of channel allocation and increased capacity for both voice and data communications.

Satellite communications for airplanes is a growing market. All new civilian aircraft are enabled for satellite communications. Positioning and navigation services and exchange of data between aeroplanes and flight control centres play an important role in the choice of routes for long distance flights. Satellite communications also provide advanced communication applications such as e-mail and Internet for passengers, and in the future, use of conventional mobile telephones while in flight.

Nera SatCom offers a full range of advanced satcom Gateway and networking products, including Inmarsat Land Earth Stations and broadband satellite communications Gateways (iPSTAR). These systems enable the switching of traffic between satellite systems and terrestrial networks.

Telenor Satellite Services is a subsidiary of Telenor of Norway (Oslo Stock Exchange: TEL and NASDAQ: TELN).
